TAG

Pomeriggio tra le Muse. La Musica sveglia il Tempo is the musical season of Gallerie d'Italia in Vicenza dedicated to fantasy, with concerts from 21 September 2025 to 12 April 2026.

“Music quickens time,
usic quickens us to the finest enjoyment of time […]
its peculiarly life-enhancing method of measuring time imparts
a spiritual awareness and value to its passage”

Thomas Mann, from "The Magic Mountain", chapter IV

Theme of the season: Music quickens Time

The XXIV Afternoon among the Muses Season - conceived by Ensemble Musagète and promoted by the Gallerie d'Italia in Vicenza - is inspired by a celebrated passage from “The Magic Mountain”, by the great German writer Thomas Mann, a novel which took the author eleven years to write, from 1913 to 1924.

This great creative effort produced one of the most significant narrative works of 20th century literature. Music plays a very important role in the extraordinary succession of events and topics that enrich the complex plot, often becoming the protagonist of entire conversations between the intellectuals who frequent the Berghof sanatorium in the Swiss Alps. In the fourth chapter of the book, the writer uses the words of the Italian intellectual Settembrini to express an enlightening statement on the power of music: an art that develops and lives in time, marking and punctuating it, creating a movement that differs markedly from the normal flow of events.

The performance of a piece of music in a “live” concert creates a symbiosis between musicians and audience, generating an interruption of the normal passage of time in favour of a different way of articulating events, due to the nature of the compositions performed, to the musicians' state of mind and the listeners' ability to “be transported” into this suspended territory. From this point of view, music (using the words of the erudite Settembrini once more) can “stun”, even “drug” thanks to an almost “suspicious” power. These considerations, deliberately extended to the point of verging on provocation, prompt us to reflect on the fact that every moment of musical time shapes a living and precious experience, unique and unrepeatable.

How can one fail to be enraptured by the magical, dreamy and nostalgic aura of a page such as the Adagio from Mozart's Quintet K 581, or not feel the impetuosity and power of the frenetic Rondo alla Zingarese that concludes the Quartet op. 25 by J. Brahms? The exploration of the world of transcription, a peculiarity of the Ensemble, continues within the season, turning not only to pieces created especially by the musicians who will perform them, but also to elaborations born at the same time as the original work, such as Beethoven's Sinfonia Pastorale transposed for string sextet in which time is seen as the succession of cyclic and natural events.

As successfully experimented in the past, once again this Season, deserving students attending the final years of the Veneto Conservatories are offered the opportunity to participate in some concerts alongside the musicians of the Ensemble.

Event within the scope of SOUND, the Gallerie d’Italia music project.
