Pomeriggio tra le Muse. Visibilità is the musical season of Gallerie d'Italia - Vicenza dedicated to fantasy, with concerts from 22 September 2024 to 6 April 2025.
“Then reigned within my lofty fantasy”
Dante, Purgatory XVII, 25
“The imagination is a kind of electronic machine that takes account of all possible combinations and chooses the ones that are appropriate to a particular purpose”
Italo Calvino
The musical season Afternoon among the Muses makes a welcome return to Gallerie d'Italia - Vicenza, reaching a truly remarkable milestone. The cultural partnership that has developed over the years between Intesa Sanpaolo's museum venue and Ensemble Musagète, the variable chamber music group founded in the early 2000s with the aim of accompanying the Gallerie's exhibition and cultural activities, is now 23 years old. Since its foundation, Ensemble Musagète has developed an intense musical activity within the splendid Palazzo Leoni Montanari, becoming renowned for its outreach activities based on the ability to offer different audiences intriguing listening perspectives that highlight the links between music, art and the broader cultural panorama.
Initiatives in the context of SOUND, the project of Gallerie d'Italia for music.
In the 2024 2025 season, for the third year running, Ensemble Musagète explores Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millennium, finding valuable suggestions among these pages for weaving plots, following a common theme in the eight concerts of the season. Visibility is the fourth chapter and while it makes no direct references to music, it offers extensive food for thought on the origins of creativity, focusing on the term/genre fantasy. Being very close to free improvisation, fantasy as a genre began to spread as early as the late Renaissance and has reached the present day via reinterpretations by some of the greatest composers in the history of music: Telemann, Mozart and von Weber from the past, through to the Widmann who is very much part of the present, to name just a few of the composers featured this season. Mozart's Serenades, for a bold set of wind instruments alone, or the grand Trio op. 100 by Schubert, are pieces that continue to inspire countless fantastic suggestions: their use in the film world has created an inseparable mélange of sound and pictures in the work of directors of the calibre of S. Kubrick and M. Forman. In this case, the Visibility of the musical work finds a further dimension of expression. The transcriptions from orchestral pages to chamber ensembles focus on two leading figures of the historical 20th century: Stravinskij and Bartók, two composers inspired by popular-folk “visions” in their reconstructions of pages of outstanding expressive power.
Once again this year, the Musical Gallerie. Dialogues in music project will be offering concert previews to secondary school students, inviting them on Saturday mornings to hear a selection of pieces from the Sunday programme, accompanied by a contextualisation of the works proposed. And thanks to the musicians of Ensemble Musagéte, some concerts will also be performed in selected sites around the city.
