Date: Friday, 6 February 2026
Time: 6:00–7:30 PM
Format: Talk
Speaker: Andrea Pilastro, Department of Biology, University of Padua; National Biodiversity Future Center

Global warming is driving not only an increase in average temperatures, but also a rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme events such as droughts, floods and—most notably—heatwaves. These phenomena are responsible for a significant increase in mortality, not only among human populations in Europe, but also within natural populations of plants and animals.
Events involving temperatures exceeding critical thresholds for many species are occurring increasingly earlier in the year, affecting reproductive periods—the most delicate phase of the life cycle.

The National Biodiversity Future Center, established with PNRR funding, aims among its many objectives to quantify the negative effects of heatwaves on animal reproduction in Italy and to assess whether there is a realistic margin for wildlife to evolve greater resistance to these extreme events through natural selection.

Hoofed Farmers, Giant Environmental Engineers: Opportunities and Challenges of Human–Animal Interactions

Date: Friday, 27 February 2026
Time: 6:00–7:30 PM
Format: Talk
Speakers: Francesca Cagnacci and Virginia Iorio, Fondazione Edmund Mach; Accademia Olimpica; National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC)

Whether crossing mountain ranges, moving between oceans or diving into the depths, large—and very large—mammals transport nutrients and energy across the planet. But these movements are far more than simple displacements: they act as true engines of life on Earth.

Large terrestrial and marine mammals can be considered environmental “engineers”, sustaining fundamental processes that shape ecosystem dynamics and support productivity of anthropogenic interest. At times humans benefit from this contribution; more often, however, it is overlooked, and human actions risk disrupting a delicate and complex dynamic balance.

Research and Innovation to Create Value from Biodiversity

Date: Friday, 27 March 2026
Time: 6:00–7:30 PM
Format: Talk
Speaker: Massimo Labra, University of Milan–Bicocca; National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC)

The National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) was established with the aim of enhancing the value of biodiversity, as affirmed by Article 9 of the Italian Constitution, which recognises biodiversity as an essential element for the future of younger generations.

Within the NBFC, over 3,000 researchers have developed actions and tools to conserve and monitor biodiversity, restore degraded ecosystems and generate value from nature. Yet research alone is not enough to protect this immense heritage. What is also needed is widespread knowledge, education—and a measure of optimism.
For this reason, the NBFC’s motto is: Biodiversity is the solution.
