Original caption by Publifoto Agency on the back of the print: "And everyone felt really small. A historical photo. Milan, 1 December 1954. This historic photograph shows Maria Callas with three great conductors: Arturo Toscanini, Victor De Sabata and Antonino Votto. The photograph was taken on 1 December 1954, when Toscanini wanted to attend one of the last rehearsals of La Vestale that would open the Milan opera season on the 7th of December that year. The maestro lingered in the stalls for a long time and then wanted to talk to Callas. As can be clearly seen in photo 237189 (Antonino Votto from behind), all three conductors are looking towards Callas who is talking about her interpretation of Spontini's opera. Maria Callas' last meeting with Toscanini was in 1955, during rehearsals for Carmen."
