As part of its travelling exhibitions programme, Carrie Mae Weems. The Heart of the Matter, curated by Sarah Hermanson Meister, will be presented at C/O Berlin, Germany, starting September 12.

Featuring more than one hundred photographs and videos spanning more than four decades, the exhibition offers an in-depth insight into the work of one of the most influential contemporary artists. Weems links personal experiences with social and historical issues, highlighting stories, people, and places that are frequently left out in historical narratives.

Using her own biography as a starting point, Weems has developed an oeuvre that explores issues of race, gender, power, and memory. Family, domestic spaces, museums, monuments, and Black communities of faith become sites where history, identity, and belonging are negotiated. Employing documentary, staged, and conceptual strategies, she creates a visual language that is equally poetic and political, inviting viewers to continually reassess their own concepts of history, identity, and representation.

The exhibition originated as a project by Gallerie d’Italia in collaboration with Aperture, where the American artist was featured from April 17 to September 7, 2025.
