The project originated from a special photographic commission conceived by the new director, Renata Ferri, in partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo, Gallerie d’Italia and Fondazione CR Firenze.

Ten artists engage with the physical and symbolic territories of the contemporary landscape, starting from a question: how has our landscape changed and, more importantly, how has the way we observe it changed?

The morphology of Italy has undergone significant changes over time, resulting from urban sprawl, the depopulation of rural areas, overtourism and climate change. Our artistic heritage is the most significant in the world and is admired by millions of tourists, yet it is still hard to form a picture of Italy that encompasses its contradictions and wonders, its difficulties and its potential.

Photography is a language capable of exploring this, offering a critical and multifaceted reflection. Through the poetics of pictures, looking at Italy through the eyes of the great masters and emerging artists, a programme of auteur works has been put together, following unhurried narratives, unburdened by the urgency of current events and consequently detached from the news, to create a festival which offers different and original perspectives.

- 01_deMayda: Sacred ibises have been settling for several years on various small islands in the Venice Lagoon. They linger near the waste barges that depart from here toward disposal facilities. Once revered in ancient Egypt as a living manifestation of Thoth — the deity of knowledge, writing, and cosmic order — the sacred ibis now seems to reappear in new geographies, inhabiting landfills, abandoned islands, and anthropogenic ecosystems.
