"Carrie Maw Weems. The words lightly between us" at Salone del Libro of Turin

Carrie Mae Weems transforms portraiture into an encounter between image and word: using a vintage large-format Polaroid camera, she photographed 20 renowned writers—met during the 2025 Turin International Book Fair—creating a series of unique images suspended between intimacy and monumentality, revealing those who stand behind the act of writing.

The American artist, known for her work on identity and her ability to interpret memory and the power of representation, in this project—commissioned by Gallerie d’Italia Intesa Sanpaolo in collaboration with the Polaroid Foundation as part of the Book Fair—demonstrates her extraordinary capacity to read reality, portraying those who, through words, take on the responsibility of telling it.
