Italian history is criss-crossed by Afro-descendant presences that are often invisible to the collective memory. The meeting proposes a reflection on these forgotten stories, to restore dignity and visibility to those who helped build the Italy of yesterday and today. A conversation that weaves memory, visual arts and narration together, offering tools enabling us to rethink collective identity and imagine a fairer and more plural historical representation.

When you live in Italy and your origins have danced with Africa from birth, you soon realise that you inherit, almost immediately, a whole vocabulary of terms to be recast. Ordinary words, such as “home”, “language”, “document” and “art”, become enriched with additional meanings, to the point of changing their value, relating them to that “cumbersome” geographical matrix which, like a heart that beats on its own, never stops making itself heard. Igiaba Scego and Marilena Umuhoza Delli draw on their experience as writers to create a series of voices to begin to compose a veritable Afro-descendant glossary, reflecting on the emotional lexicon of a cultural reality that can no longer be ignored in our country. The house we finally belong to is a new language to inhabit. Event in collaboration with Fondazione Circolo dei lettori.
At the end of the event, from 7:30 p.m., there will be a book signing.
Event streamed live.

What role can art play in the processes of healing and healing from colonial and racial trauma? A conversation about art as a reparative practice, capable of opening up new scenarios, making the invisible visible and activating processes of social transformation. A meeting that questions the power of artistic and performative language to reformulate memory, sew up its wounds, reactivate its hidden senses, give it back its voice.
As part of the cycle of meetings curated by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, in collaboration with Fondazione Circolo dei lettori, resulting from discussions with experts on identity, representation and language: Grace Fainelli, expert in inclusive communication and plural languages; Hanane Makhloufi, poet and curator of Black History Month Torino; Valentino Agunu, multifaceted artist: musician, actor and performer.
There will be a signing at the end of the event, from 7 p.m.
