Verdigris / Ambergris is the title of the great British photographer's latest book, which completes a cycle of works devoted to his own family, mortality and the transience of life. It is a pair of books focused on people scanning the horizon looking at the earth (Verdigris) and the sea (Ambergris). How does one focus on what is in front of everyone but what no one can see?

Speakers: Erik Kessels
Throughout his career of more than 20 years, Kessels has established himself as a fundamental and unquestionable point of reference in the field of what we call “found photography". Instead of taking new pictures, for most of his projects he assembles pre-existing photographs and reuses them as tiles to form his own mosaic. He is an artist without a camera or even a lens: in his practice, photography is a ready-made element to be sampled and recontextualised. The result is a sort of ecosystem of images, in which nothing is added to the enormous quantity of images that now crowds the world and grows exponentially day by day, but which, on the contrary, recoups and recycles what already exists. Another theme of this conference is the role of images in the times in which we live, and how it is possible to look at them in ways that differ from mere consumption.

Speaker: David Campany
Photography is often described as a story-telling medium, but is it? Are not the stillness and silence of photography an obstacle to narration? In making photographs as tableaux to be contemplated for their singularity, Jeff Wall has pursued an art with a particularly rich and complex relation to narrative. He has made pictures inspired by situations and stories (one of which is even titled ‘The Storyteller’), while accepting that pictures suspend, allowing the viewer to imagine, or to not imagine, a surrounding story.
