FIVE WOMEN FOR THE HISTORY OF NAPLES

Cycle of meetings between January and May

The side events designed to take an in-depth multidisciplinary look at issues connected with the Artemisia Gentileschi in Naples exhibition, which will take place from 3 December 2022 at Gallerie d’Italia in Naples, include a cycle of five meetings. Curated by Elisa Novi Chavarria and Giovanni Muto, they are dedicated to five women who, like Artemisia, managed to carve out a high-profile role for themselves in the century in which they lived and worked. The aim is to introduce the wider public to the body of research developed over the last thirty years that has improved our knowledge about women in the modern and contemporary age, as well as the leading roles that many of them played in the patronage of the arts and the political and cultural life of the city of Naples.

This initiative is sponsored by Società Napoletana di Storia Patria.

MERMAIDS, MADAMS AND YOUNG LADIES

A theatre project by LA SCENA DELLE DONNE – drama workshops with ladies in Forcella

10 March 2023 at 20.00, 20.15, 20.30

Walking along the exhibition halls while listening to some highlights of Artemisia Gentileschi’s life. And  then going through the building to meet some stories of women particularly linked, for various reasons, to the city of Naples: legendary and mythological figures or even real human beings. Commoners, artists, saints and queens described and represented according to the characteristics of the women on the stage.

It will then be possible to meet Artemisia in dialogue with Diana Di Rosa and also, among the others, Andreana Basile, Giovanna I d'Angiò, Maria D'Avalos, The Mermaid Partenope, Bernardina Pisa, Saint Restituta, the Madonna of the Shoes and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Maria Lorenza Longo, Maria Paris. A parade of sometimes forgotten female figures who, despite not being Neapolitan by birth, have chosen Naples as their own homeland. The will be imagined while narrating about themselves, their times and unknown pieces of history.
