From 14 March to 23 August 2026, Palazzo Strozzi presents an exhibition dedicated to the great master of American art, Mark Rothko. Featuring an extraordinary selection of works, including large-scale paintings on display for the first time in Italy, drawn from prestigious private collections and international museums such as the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Tate in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, this is an exhibition not to be missed.

Curated by Christopher Rothko and Elena Geuna, the exhibition explores the evolution of Rothko’s art, from his early figurative works, in an exchange with Expressionism and Surrealism, to the famous abstract canvases of the 1950s and 1960s, also taking a closer look at his connection with the Italian artistic tradition. The exhibition pays tribute to a central figure in the history of modern art, whose works create spaces in which colour and light inspire meditation and introspection, in a constant tension between abstraction and spirituality.

The project then extends from Palazzo Strozzi to the city of Florence, with two satellite sections that involve two venues particularly dear to the artist: the Museum of San Marco, featuring works that engage in dialogue with the frescoes of Beato Angelico, and the Vestibule of the Laurentian Library, designed by Michelangelo.
