The Christmas appointment with great Italian art that treats the people of Milan to an extraordinary exhibition every year in Sala Alessi, the historic reception hall of the City of Milan, is back.
This year's exhibition will feature a great masterpiece of the Italian and European Renaissance: The Madonna with Child and Saints Simon and Judas, known as “La Madonna di San Simone” by Federico Barocci, a large altarpiece from the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino. Also present is the 18th century Neapolitan Nativity Scene from the Civic Galleries of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.
The exhibition is enriched by a precious signed drawing by Barocci from the Gabinetto dei Disegni of Castello Sforzesco, thanks to which visitors can immerse themselves in Barocci's creative process, discovering the techniques and secrets behind the creation of one of his best-loved masterpieces.
The exhibition is promoted and produced by the City of Milan thanks to the contribution of Intesa Sanpaolo, as institutional partner, and the support of Rinascente. Curated by Luigi Gallo and Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari, the organisation is entrusted to Civita Mostre e Musei. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Skira Editore.
In continuity with previous editions, the collaboration between Palazzo Marino and Gallerie d'Italia in Milan continues this year. Holders of the exhibition card are entitled to a discount allowing admission and a guided tour of the concurrent exhibition “Il genio di Milano. Crocevia delle arti dalla Fabbrica del Duomo al Novecento Italiano”.
During the exhibition at Palazzo Marino, there will also be an opportunity to discover the architectural and artistic treasures found all around the Milanese territory, thanks to Natale nei Borghi, a Christmas initiative promoted and organised in cooperation with the Associazione Antichi Borghi Milanesi. From 14 December to 5 January, visitors can enjoy free guided tours organised at 17 sites identified within the city's nine boroughs. These tours will show off the different areas as urban nuclei and unveil the art treasures that make up a not insignificant part of Milan's cultural heritage.
