A Castello di Rivoli programme in collaboration with Gallerie d’Italia – Torino

From 15 November, every Tuesday from 13:00 to 14:00 Gallerie d’Italia Turin will be hosting a new programme of meetings organised by Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea.

Lunch Talks @ GDI – Torino. Talking Art. Important artists, important exhibitions, important topicsgives the public the chance to learn more about contemporary art. What is digital art? What is Arte Povera? Why is there an exhibition called documenta? What is an Olafur Eliasson “machine”? Who are the environmental thought leaders in the arts? What is behind a great performance? Responding to these questions, the Lunch Talks are an opportunity to get to know the works of some of the most prominent contemporary artists, learn about momentous exhibitions that have redefined the concept of art, and explore the key issues dominating the cultural debate.

The meetings are held by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Director of Castello di Rivoli, Marcella Beccaria, Head Curator and Curator of the Collections, and Marianna Vecellio, Curator, who will accompany the public in their exploration of modern art, sharing their own direct experiences and ongoing research.

Held in the Arena of Gallerie d’Italia Turin in a relaxed and informal setting, the Lunch Talks offer a new take on the traditional “lunch break”. Participants will receive a lunch box prepared by Costardi Bros and can conclude their experience by visiting the photographic exhibitions Lisetta Carmi. Playing loud and Gregory Crewdson. Eveningside which recently opened in the museum in piazza San Carlo.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Digital art and its precursors
The Lunch Talk examines the initial signs of digital art, found in the first technological works of the 1960s (“media art”), as well as the most recent developments in the area of immersive digital works and NFTs.

Marcella Beccaria, Amalfi 68. Arte povera più azioni povere
The Lunch Talk examines Arte povera più azioni povere (‘Poor art plus poor actions’), an experimental exhibition held in Amalfi in 1968. Curated by Germano Celant, the exhibition revealed the innovative power of Arte Povera, for the first time presenting works, actions and performances by the artists that rewrote the history of contemporary art.

29 NOVEMBER 2022 (13:00-14:00)
Marianna Vecellio, Post Human 1992. The simulacrum society in art
This Lunch Talk presents one of the most ground-breaking exhibitions. Curated by Jeffrey Deitch in 1992, Post Human takes stock of the new generation of postmodern artists, including Jeff Koons, Matthew Barney and Cindy Sherman, who express the sense of a society in which humans have been replaced in the collective imagination by consumer goods.

6 DECEMBER 2022 (13:00-14:00)
Marianna Vecellio, Ecology in contemporary art
This Lunch Talk looks at the change of perspective in art as motivated by the climate crisis, examining new alliances between forms of life through the environmental practices of artists like Joseph Beuys, Giuseppe Penone, Claire Pentecost, Michael Rakowitz, Rossella Biscotti and Tabita Rezaire.

This Lunch Talk examines the most interesting themes and works of the contemporary artists that took part in one of the most successful exhibitions of this century. Welcoming almost a million visitors in 100 days, dOCUMENTA(13) radically changed the world of art.

Marcella Beccaria, The art of performance. News from backstage
This Lunch Talk looks behind the scenes of major Performance Art exhibition projects at Castello di Rivoli, from the major retrospective on Vanessa Beecroft in 2003 through to the 2021 exhibition on Anne Imhof, undisputed protagonist and cult figure on the contemporary culture scene, analysing some of the biggest controversies.

This Lunch Talk tells the story and reveals the secrets of one of South Africa’s most important artists. Through his art, Kentridge has helped to end Apartheid and change our view of global north-south relations.

This Lunch Talk tells the story of one of the most original personalities of our time: the Egyptian-Canadian artist of Armenian origin Anna Boghiguian, known for her numerous travels, who with her expressionist drawings retraces the history of humanity in globalisation, offering a poetic take on life.

This Lunch Talk examines the career of Olafur Eliasson, one of the world’s most prominent artists today, taking a close look at his visionary installations currently exhibited at Castello di Rivoli. Described as “machines for seeing ourselves seeing” by the artist himself, Eliasson’s works can help us to understand the nature and reality that surrounds us in unexpected ways.
